Article Title: Single-Step Technique of Magnetic Data Reduction

The conventional two-steps approach of reduction of magnetic total field data can be cumbersome and may be time consuming. We have assessed the possibility of using a single and simple approach of correcting such data set for the effects of diurnal variation and those of long-wavelength, deep-seated, sources of the geomagnetic field. Total field data recorded at a fixed point (base station) within a survey area can be modelled and used to compute base station field whose time coordinates correspond with the time of field measurements at the grid stations. The differences between the field data and those computed for the base station automatically gives the required residuals, the magnetic total field anomalies. The method has been tested on detailed experimental magnetic data acquired from Uwani, south-eastern Nigeria. The residual field obtained has been compared with the residual from the same data set using conventional method of interpretation and with the vertical gradient acquired from the same grid since the latter is known to be usually associated with high resolution. The result has shown that the method is dependable and can be efficiently used for reduction of magnetic field data
