Article Title: A Fiber Optic Speedometer using Bifurcated Bundle Fiber
by P. Kishore, D. Dinakar, P. Vengal Rao, M. Sai Shankar, D.Sengupta K. Srimannarayana, and R.L.N Sai Prasad

Abstract:
An extrinsic non-contact speedometer is demonstrated using bifurcated bundle fibers to measure the shaft rotation of the engines. The sensor is designed based on the principle of reflective light intensity modulation. A small calibrated reflector is embedded on the shaft. The light from the IR-LED is launched into a bundle of fibers called transmitting fibers and is falls on the reflecting surface. The reflected light is coupled into the bundle of receiving fibers and detected by the photodiode. The FFT of the time domain signal of the sensor gives the rotational speed of the shaft. The sensor has the advantages of immune to EMI, simple design, low cost, and flexible in size.
