Article Title: Personnel Training and Development; A Vital Tool for Construction Workers Performance

Abstract:
Lack of training and development of construction employees have been seen as having negative impact on the productivity of the employee as well as the construction industries in general. The aim of the study is to investigating the training and development requirement of construction personnel and evaluates the effects on workers performance. This research will be of benefit to private and public construction firm because it will contribute to the knowledge of their personnel as the research has been able to identify various methods suitable for personnel training and development in construction industry. The instrument used in the collection of data was a structured questionnaire which was distributed to operatives, professionals and management cadre in construction industry in the south west geopolitical zone in Nigeria. The data obtained was analyzed with the use of descriptive and inferential statistical methods. The study revealed that the current status of the company and employee current skill level or performance as determinant of training and development of employee, mostly used training and development methods in construction industry as on the job training method, management and supervisory development and career development methods. It also revealed that there is no correlation between training needs and form of employment and the current level of skill and/ or performance of an employee depend on the year of experience of employee. The study concluded that employee become more valuable to the firm and to society when trained and it recommend that construction industries are therefore encouraged to train and develop their employee to the fullest advantage in order to enhance their effectiveness.
