Article Title: Estimation of HD Drilling Time Using Deterministic and Triangular Distribution Functions

Horizontal Directional Drilling (HDD) is a powerful technique in utility installation through different soil conditions and under different environments. HDD machines for drilling are available worldwide in a non destructive or un disturbing operation under rail rood, pavement, and walkways. HDD has short setup time, long drive length in installation, possible horizontal and vertical alignments changes, its ability to move around unseen obstacles, and its suitability to different topographic features and surface shape and buriers. This research aims to describe HDD operation in term of resources, stages, and time required for different activities, and its productivity. Also, the research focuses on duration of drilling (preream and reaming) activity described by triangular distribution and HDD other activities described by deterministic and triangular distribution. A 1,145 ft length project was selected to study the durations of main drilling time and other minor activities in HDD in clayey conditions. A 12 in. pilot bore-hole, and four stages of prereaming and reaming of 22, 26, 36, and 42 in addition to the pullback stage were observed and studied. An average productivity of HDD operation stages were estimated as 0.93, 0.862, 1.13, 0.801, 0.53, and 6.98 ft/minute respectively. The results of current study are helpful in estimating productivity of HDD projects, so duration of projects, and required resources could be predicted
